Thirty

Back in the old days newspaper writers ended their typed stories with "--30--".
We don't know the reason, or why they didn't use 20 or 40 instead. The marking told the linotype operator that nothing more could be expected on this particular story, unless the writer later added another page marked "more" or "add."

Your Editor cannot now physically cover the stories that need covering, in person…and if we cannot give 100% to this effort we are not going to do it. We will never do a cut and paste job from other newspapers.

The neurosurgeon is assembling her macabre tool kit …titanium screws, rods, screwdriver, knife, drills, etc. We considered putting this job out for bids to avoid getting a nice letter from the D.A. but since we are using the same firm that Assistant D.A. Nic Lelecas used earlier this year we feel safe. Besides, who wants the low bidder probing around in your lumbar region. That would be like giving the airport taxiway job to the low bidder and then complaining about the rough surface.

The boat is done until spring. No golf until June. Other recreational activities? Forget it.
These are bitter pills. But the surgery is welcomed and we can't wait. At least we'll get some sleep for a few hours, without pain.

We appreciate the many positive emails from our loyal readers over the course of the last year and a half. The Grove Observer, "the biggest, baddest most colorful newspaper never to see the light of day" would not have continued without your support. A weekly circulation of 800 isn't bad these days.

But right now, we must say "30" and hope that we can continue with a 100% effort in late December. Until mid-November, look for occasional articles from our four-legged employee, Missy MacTavish, and coverage of important events like kick-boxing and city council meetings. The rest will have to wait.
(Actually, reduced coverage is even coming from newspapers like the Tulsa World, which next year will reduce its page size to something slightly wider than toilet paper. They say that the paper will be easier to read on the subway.) Note: Grove does not have any subways, except for the sandwich place.
