Three Injured in Boating Incident Saturday

The Grand River Dam Authority Lake Patrol is reporting that three people were transported to the hospital Saturday afternoon following a boating accident on Grand Lake.

Those three people (names and conditions not known at press time) were passengers in a cigarette-type boat driven by Harold Chandler (Fairland). According to GRDA Lake Patrol Chief Bruce Smith, the boat was traveling at a high-rate of speed, hit a large wave and went airborne. When the boat came down into the water, the transom broke and the boat spun sideways. One passenger, a female, suffered injuries when she was thrown from the boat. The other passengers remained in the boat but were injured by the impact. According to Smith, there were four people in the boat. Chandler did not require medical attention.

The accident occurred at approximately 3 PM near the Woodland Shores area of Grand Lake. The lake patrol responded to the scene and attempted to tow the damaged boat to shore. However, it eventually sank. Smith said the location was marked and it may be possible to retrieve the boat in the future.
The GRDA Lake Patrol’s investigation into the accident is ongoing at this time. More details will be available at a later time.
