Brogden Appointed to Airport Trust Board
Bob Brogden, Grove Businessman, was nominated to the Grove Municipal Airport Trust Authority board by Mayor Carolyn Nuckolls this week, replacing Gary Tripensee, whose term expires Aug. 31. However, a second appointment will need to be made, as Max Schuermann resigned at Monday's board meeting saying he was moving out of Delaware County.
City Council approved the Brogden appointment by a vote of 3-2, with Councilors Gary Bishop and Larry Parham voting nay.
In addition to Tripensee, Mike Jacobs, president of Jacobs Manufacturing Corporation based near the airport, applied for the position. Terms of service are for four years.
The new appointments will drastically alter the makeup of the airport board, which has been a source of irritation the past year over transfer of property to the city. Last fiscal year the board spent $9,176 in legal fees fighting with the city.
Councilman Larry Parham said "I am amazed that someone with years of experience in purchases of more than $1 million would not be appointed," referring to Tripensee.

This vote was a another dissapointment by some on the city council to do the right thing for Grove and the community. The Grove airport has been a target for three members of the city council headed up by David Helms and backed up by Carrolyn Knukolls. This appointment of Bob Brogden was a shock and surprize to many in the community, including my self. What Larry Parham stated in Tuesdays council meeting was that one applicant [Gary Trepensee who was not named] has over 40 years in the aerospace industry and has Fedral grant expereince totalling 1.5 Billion. Yet he and other well qualified canidates were passed over for issues of personal grudge. I keep hearing things will calm down in the local goverment and everybody needs to work together. Then the next council meeting comes and guess what. another grenade is thrown from the three counsil members, who are in control of this city. I want to believe that change is possable but lately I am seeing that that will not happen until the April election, if anyone is paying attention! For myself a transplant from Arizona who moved here 15 years ago question whether I have set my roots in the right soil or not! To Terry Abercrombie. I want to thank you for 19 hard years as the Grove airport manager. Your dedication with the help of others have made our small town airport one of the best in the state. Like our roads, bridges, parks and municipal buildings the Grove airport is an important infrastructure to our community.
Isn't it interesting when two members vote against an item and three vote in favor that the three are accused of foul play because the other two didn't agree. Since when do the minority speak for the citizens, I thought the majority ruled. When analyzed most votes are 3 to 1 with the fifth vote echoing that of Larry Parham. Thus although LP would like to micro manage the city, fortunately there are enough cool heads to keep that from happening.
It would appear that the sand may be changed in the airport group sand box. Hopefully the airport will begin being run as a business and not a play area for an elite group.
